Differences between Echam and Icon

Altough Echam and Icon have similar physics implemented, the results of climate simulations can deviate between those two models, even when using the same forcing data. This is somehow logical, Icon and Echam are different models, but we want to raise the awareness that the results cannot be compared 1 to 1. We also strongly recommend to do an in-depth verification of your results when using Icon.

A comparitive study for Icon and Echam was conducted by MPI in 2018:

Stastistical comparisons conducted by C2SM showed large differences for essential fields as T_2M, all kind of precitpiations or heat fluxes. The comparison (Welch's-Test) was done using the global annual means of a 10-year climate simulation on Euler.
